Accessible Tourism

Accessible tourism is about making it easy for all people to enjoy tourism experiences.

  • seniors
  • people with a disability
  • people from non-English speaking backgrounds
  • parents with children

An overlap exists between these market segments. 25% of NSW population are over 65 or have a disability.

Seniors

There are currently 1.1 million seniors in NSW, and expected to grow to over 2 million by 2026, which will represent nearly 27% of the population. Research shows that 75% of seniors travelled in the previous year and 80% want to travel in the near future. Two-thirds of seniors have a disability.

People with a disability

Currently there are 730,000 people with a physical disability in New South Wales. Research indicates that 77% of these people travelled within Australia in the previous year and 11% travelled overseas.

Interestingly, the average group size for domestic trips was 4.1 people, generally with only one person having a disability in the group.

Opportunities for the tourism industry to tap into the Accessible market:

  • Contact your local access committee (through your local council) to seek advice on the accessibility of your tourism product and identify what adaptations, if any, are necessary to make it easy for all potential customers to enjoy your product.
  • Present information about the accessibility of your tourism facility or experience clearly (large print will assist vision impaired people) and accurately.
  • Communicate information about the how easy and accessible your tourism product is to your customers, particularly seniors and people with a disability.
