Tourism and travel directly account for 1 in every 21 jobs in Australia.

  • Estimated Direct = 162,500 jobs
  • Estimated Indirect =  112,900 jobs
  • Estimated Direct + Indirect = 275,400 jobs 

Industry size

The tourism industry in NSW is larger than mining; communication services; accommodation, cafes and restaurants; electricity, gas and water supply; personal and other services; cultural and recreational services; and agriculture, forestry and fishing.

How tourism works for everybody 

Sydney is Australia’s leading gateway, and is the most popular destination for overseas visitors. New South Wales attracts 53% of international visitors, ahead of Queensland, 39% and Victoria, 29%.

Domestic and international visitors to NSW destinations outside Sydney generated a staggering 67 million nights of accommodation in regional areas and $11 billion in income for local communities

Australians have a massive 123 million days of leave accrued – time to take a holiday in NSW!

Tourism generates jobs

Hotels, airlines and tour operators are the most visible tourism businesses, but many more people are employed in the tourism industry, or benefit from it. As visitors’ dollars trickle down, they spread throughout the economy and the community in often surprising ways.
